Accomodation:
Australia is full of tourists, especially backpackers. A lot of those backpackers are young, male, and first time away from home plus allowed to drink. This combination can be quite annoying, as you might imagine yourself. So, the final word of advice is: (Young) women, if you are not experienced in dealing with this sort of people, do either not travel alone or do not stay at "typical" backpacker places. Apart from that, finding accomodation is quite easy. You might want to go for the smaller hostels, the ones that are a bit away from the "action", since the big and "central" places tend to attract annoying people (backpackers). Look for phrases like "close to the action", "own bar", "party place", or "hotspot" in hostel descriptions to identify the bad places. In the high season it might be a smart thing to book a few days ahead if you want to stay at a specific hostel. You'll always find accomodation, but probably not in the place you'd have preferred.
Getting around:
Do not book trips with Oz Experience or any of their associates unless you're an arsehole yourself. Greyhound/McCaffertys offer kilometre passes and other package deals. Most hostels will pick you up from the long-distance bus stations. In NSW, the train might be an option as well, especially if you're a student. It's very comfortable and safe. Otherwise, if you're not on a tight schedule and can afford to hang around for a couple of days, you might be able to find people in your hostel that are willing to give you a lift. As for driving yourself: it is immoral to drive on the wrong side of the road! Remember your roots - we continental Europeans are superior to this prisoners' offspring. *g* Domestic flights are quite cheap and worth the money, especially so if you're short on time.
Reiseführer/Travel Guidebooks:
Do not rely too much on them. Especially the "Lonely Planet" is being overrated, if not mystified.
